The social relay started on Feb. 11, 2023, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Icmate is part of the network of institutes joining the social promotion campaign "Give a selfie for Women at Cnr" aimed at highlighting the work, skills and passion of women at the National Research Council and conveying a positive message to young women stepping in the world of research because "Every day should be #womenscienceday".
The campaign is included among CNR Centennial initiatives and - thanks to the collaboration of the CNR network - aspires to become a virtual relay race in which CNR Institutes, including ICMATE, will run together to achieve gender equality in research and innovation.
"Give a selfie for Women at Cnr"', inspired by similar initiatives of other international research centers, was started on Feb. 11, 2022 by the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Technologies "Giulio Natta" (Cnr-Scitec), as social campaign with the title "Give a selfie for Women in Science."
The initiative restarted this year with an exceptional selfie, that of President Maria Chiara Carrozza, an authoritative testimony of a woman and a researcher heading a research institution, in a strongly evocative year - 2023 - in which the CNR celebrates its Centenary. Then, the selfie of Lidia Armelao, Director of the DSCTM followed on February 13, and now the initiative will be enriched by shots from many other women belonging to Institutes recognizing themselves in the enunciated intent and who will join along the way in picking up the baton.
For a year, weekly photos of women working in the institutes participating in the initiative, accompanied by a brief description, will be posted on social media. Then, there will be a social tam tam among the various institutes to spread the campaign as widely as possible.
Now is the time for Icmate, which will make its official debut in March when the first selfie will be posted on its social channels (Twitter and Instagram and taken up on Facebook).
Through the faces of the women who work at Icmate and who will virtually populate selfie after selfie the initiative's launch image icons, we are going to discover many stories of passion for science and provide role models for young women.
However, we are, already, contributing to the success of the campaign by reposting the selfies and giving visibility to all female colleagues from institutes already on social media. And all Icmate staff can do the same.
People who have joined and will join this social campaign are convinced that economic, social, educational and territorial development becomes complete if it is also achieved with a concomitant development of gender equality in research and innovation. This thinking is also reflected in the timely public communications of the top leaders of funding bodies and those overseeing international research (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA7YdszDJ_0 - Ursula von der Leyen) as well as reiterated in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The recent introduction of a gender equality plan (GEP) as an eligibility criterion in the Horizon Europe program funding (2021-2027) and the declination of the gender dimension in the content of research and innovation induce support for this approach.
