In technology transfer, ICMATE has consolidated expertise and structures that can be available for joint projects with companies in the advanced manufacturing, in various sectors including metals and inorganic materials, coatings, nanostructured materials for catalysis and for various energy applications, as well as compounds and materials for medicine or for radiochemical applications. The skills go from the development of the synthesis and production processes to the supply of prototypes and functional components.
The application areas are various, as materials for applications in the energy sector, ranging from renewable energies, to thermoelectric, systems for energy efficiency, gas turbine materials, materials for thermonuclear fusion, protective and self-healing films for the protection of cultural heritage or for protection to corrosion, molecular nanosystems for medical applications and so on.
A more detailed overview is available through the following links:
In these fields, ICMATE, as an interface with industrial companies, provides technical and scientific skills and appropriate solutions for research projects and consulting activities in the development of products, processes and new technologies.
In the global market, as in the Italian scenario, the key to the survival and development of enterprises is the technological innovation, that allows moving towards new goals in terms of process and products, allowing the renewal of industrial structures and the identification of new technological developments and market areas.
Innovation is often originated from an intuition, but the path from intuition to the discovery and to its applications is not easy and immediate: research is the basis of an effective and concrete innovative process.
Research, in fact, allows the enterprises to have tools and knowledge to identify technological innovations and possible applications, thus having possibilities otherwise inaccessible, especially for small companies.
This key role of research is also recognized by various political realities, which have established specific registers that attest the industrial research and technology transfer capabilities.
ICMATE obtained for example in Lombardy accreditation from QuESTIO, Quality Evaluation in Science and Technology for Innovation Opportunity, which is the instrument implemented by the Lombardy Region to give visibility to the multiplicity of structures operating in the area and to the services they provided to support research and technological innovation.
The ethical principles of the staff of the CNR research institutes are set out in Decree of the President of the Republic 16 April 2013, n. 62:

The management of intellectual property rights for the results of the activities of ICMATE on behalf of the client is established according to the CNR policy.
ICMATE, in order to support companies along paths aimed at technological innovation, provides the following tools:
Next to research activities, ICMATE also develop activities to support companies through the various laboratories of which the Institute is equipped.
These laboratories, assisted by a series of equipment and supplies,
combine the study of material properties
to the manufacturing processes of materials and devices.
Here are the facilities, grouped by topic:
- Film deposition Lab. (Padua)
- Heat treatment Lab. (Padua)
- Lab. of elettrochemistry and photoelettrochemistry (Padua)
- Lab. of electrochemistry and electrochemical characterization of nanostructured materials (Padua)

ICMATE shares with companies a technical and scientific capacity for targeted activities on:
- research and development of products
- research, development and optimization of processes
- new technologies
Each activity reported in the "Research" section can be evaluated in term of cooperation with Companies, primarily addressed to innovation of materials / processes / devices and issues concerning the materials/devices behaviour under operating conditions.
Often public funding, aimed at promoting Research, Development and Technological Innovation, fail to be effectively used, as a consequence of information gaps and/or very intricate procedures.
ICMATE offers its expertise to support companies in the definition of innovation programs, in the preparation and submission of proposals in the appropriate regional, national or European contexts, particularly in the following areas:
- research and technological development
- innovation and technology transfer
- training of human resources
- international technology cooperation
